Kingdom Shopping Centre Hippos Are On Parade

The 2013 Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade competition is underway

On Thursday the Kingdom Shopping Centre organised a special launch party for all the creators of the 2013 hippos. Over 500 nursery, primary & high school children took part in an educational workshop by Scottish SSPCA and watched their hippo be unveiled for the Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade competition to commence.

This year's hippo parade involves over 7500 local Glenrothes children and the new addition for 2013 is the introduction of work from 3 local high schools. Their piece of work is very exciting with the brief to create a hippo from recycled materials. The winning high school hippo will become a piece of art in The Centre for one year.

The winning nursery and primary school will each receive £500, sponsorship of a hippo at Edinburgh Zoo and sponsorship of a seal unit at the Scottish SPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, Clackmannashire.

2013 Hippo Parade selected charity is the Scottish SPCA, Scotland's animal welfare charity. The event will help to raise awareness of the fantastic and vital work of the organisation. Donations will continue to rescue, rehome and release thousands of injured, defenceless and abandoned animals every year.

To vote for you're your favourite hippos visit www.kingdomshoppingcentre.co.uk or Kingdom Shopping Centre on Facebook or collect a voting form at the Information Desk. The competition closes on the 14th August -Good Luck to all and let the best hippos win!

The Kingdom Shopping Centre's Hippo Parade is back for 2013. This year will be bigger and better than ever, with the three local Glenrothes High Schools now involved in the competition.

The Hippo Parade is in its third year, its popularity has led to winning national awards and coverage in national press and television. The first year focused on the twin town celebrations and offered every Glenrothes primary school a fibreglass hippo to decorate. Last year, the hippos had babies and all Glenrothes nurseries were offered a baby fibreglass hippo to decorate. This year 32 local nurseries and primary schools are involved; the winning nursery and primary school will each receive £500, sponsorship of a hippo at Edinburgh Zoo and sponsorship of a seal unit at the Scottish SPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, Clackmannanshire.

2013 welcomes the High School pupils who have a huge hippo challenge on their hands. Their brief is to create a hippo (maximum 2.4metres long by 1.5metres tall) from recycled materials. The winning High School hippo will become a piece of Kingdom Shopping Centre art and will be displayed in the Centre for one year. All hippos this year are themed around Visit Scotland's Homecoming theme of Nature.

The Hippo Parade inspires the community every year and this year the selected charity is the Scottish SPCA, Scotland's animal welfare charity. Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, "We are delighted to be part of the Kingdom Shopping Centre's Hippo Parade. We are always extremely grateful for donations as we don't receive any government or lottery funding so we rely entirely on the generosity of the public. These donations allow us to continue to rescue, rehome and release thousands of injured, defenceless and abandoned animals every year."

The hippos will be unveiled to the nursery, primary and high school pupils at a dedicated launch party in The Centre. From the 14th June the hippos will be on parade in The Centre, voting in Centre and on the Kingdom Shopping Centre's Facebook page will commence. The competition winners will be announced on the 14th August.

"We are over the moon that this year over 7500 local children will be part of the hippo parade. A warm return to the schools and nurseries that have entered and won in previous years and a warm welcome to new nurseries and primaries as well as the three participating high schools. We cannot wait to see all the finished hippos back in The Centre. We are also extremely pleased to be working with the Scottish SPCA and raising awareness of their fantastic work." Robert Winter, Centre Manager.

Glenrothes nursery children braved the snow to be reunited with their hippo on Monday at the Rothes Halls. This special celebration organised by Tricia Marwick MSP and The Kingdom Shopping Centre focused on the latest additions to the Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade, the baby hippos were introduced last year to include 15 local nursery schools.

Tricia Marwick and Rachel Cheer from CHAS opened the event, highlighting the fantastic work of the children and the fact their hippos helped to raise £700 to benefit the children at Rachel House Children's Hospice. The children met the Kingdom Shopping Centre mascot, Kingsley the Lion, the Kingdom Centre Kingsley Club entertained the children with balloon making, story telling and the children also designed their very own hippo.

The Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade 2012 included over 4500 Glenrothes children; the winners were Southwood Nursery and Milton of Balgonie Primary School. The competition will take place in 2013 with a new theme and a plan to include more Glenrothes children. Watch this space!

NEW TRAVEL STORE OPENS IN GLENROTHES - Barrhead Travel to serve local communities with franchise outlet

Barrhead Travel

(Photograph - Barry, Elaine & Team)

Barrhead Travel, Scotland's largest independent travel group, has opened a new store in the Kingdom Centre in Glenrothes, under a franchise agreement with B&E Travel Ltd.

The new branch will be owned and operated by local travel agents Elaine Murray and Barry Hancock, and will be staffed by a team of six. The pair of friends have many years' experience in the travel business, and have worked for a number of well-known travel companies in the past.

Elaine said: "Barry and I talked for years about how we could do things differently - and better - if we ran our own travel agency, but it was always just a dream. Recently we started looking into it in more detail, and Barrhead Travel stood out from the rest of the travel industry in so many ways. They're an independent agency, which means that we can give customers the holiday that best suits their needs, rather than having the company dictate to us who we can and can't sell."

Barry stressed that customer service was their main priority. He said, "Elaine and I knew what we wanted to do - operate our own agency where we could tailor make holidays to suit the client, rather than expect an off-the-shelf product to be suitable. We'll be the only independent agency in Glenrothes, and that means our customers will have much more choice than they've been used to."

The Barrhead Travel franchise store in Glenrothes holding a prize draw for £100 of holiday vouchers for all customers who book a holiday with the outlet before December 24th.

Chief Executive of Barrhead travel, Sharon Munro, said: "We are delighted to support Elaine and Barry in their new venture and are optimistic that this will be one of many more new franchise opportunities across the UK.

"We already have several franchise outlets across Scotland and beyond - local operations with a vested interest in the people and community they serve.

"The Glenrothes store will be staffed by people living in and around the town and, supported by Barrhead Travel's extensive network of operators, tourism contacts, its technology and its strong brand reputation, I have no doubt the store will prove a huge success.

"I wish Barry and Elaine all the very best with the new store and look forward to a long and successful working relationship with them."

Further details on Barrhead Travel franchise opportunities can be found at www.barrheadtravel.co.uk or by visiting your nearest branch.
