The Kingdom Shopping Centre collected a Green Apple Award from The Green Organisation's Scottish award ceremony at Edinburgh Zoo, on the 2nd of September.
The Kingdom Shopping Centre's innovative concept of introducing a recycling art project competition into the Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade captured the judges attention.
Three local high schools were approached to be involved in an environmental competition starting at the beginning of the year. The brief; to create an almost life sized hippo from recycled materials. Linking into the nursery & primary school projects, the local community cast their votes on line and in the mall as part of the Parade. The two dual winning hippos will be displayed in the Centre for one year to be enjoyed as pieces of mall art.
Kingdom Shopping Centre won of the Scottish Green Apple last year for their electric car & recycle week activities and the International Green Apple Awards in 2010 and 2011. The Kingdom Shopping Centre Management is committed to continually creating a green environmentally friendly shopping centre for shoppers, tenants and the community as a whole.
The 2013 Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade at Kingdom Shopping Centre has come to a close and we are delighted to announce the winners!
This year's theme 'nature' sparked creativeness among 7500 local children and they submitted a fantastic variety of designs. 17 local Primary Schools, 15 local Nurseries and for the first time 3 local High Schools took part with all of them thoroughly enjoying the events during the parade and the judging.
So, without further delay, we are very pleased to announce that the winning primary school is - for the second year running - Milton of Balgonie Primary School, age group P1-3. "The children created newsletters and sent them to every home in the village asking them to vote for their hippo, this enterprising behaviour has resulted in winning for the second year running & we are thrilled with the result." Mrs McLean Headteacher of Milton of Balgonie Primary School.
The winning nursery was Pitteuchar East Primary School, "We are delighted to win the Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade 2013 and the creativity of the children has been recognised by this award" Mrs Knussen Nursery School Headteacher.
The winning school and nursery both received £500 and a years sponsorship of the Hippo enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo which was presented on Friday by Tricia Marwick, MSP. The children were over the moon and the staff were cheering along with them.
The winning High School hippos were Glenrothes & Auchmuty High School in joint first place, both hippos will be displayed in The Kingdom Shopping Centre as a piece of art for one year.
Working in partnership with Scottish SSPCA, the event helped to raise £500, as well as awareness of the incredible and critical work the animal rescue charity carries out.
Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, "We were delighted to be part of the Kingdom Shopping Centre's Hippo Parade this year.
"As a charity that receives no government or lottery funding, we rely entirely on the generosity of the public and we wish to thank each and every person who gave us a donation.
"These funds will go towards helping us care for the thousands of abused, abandoned an injured animals we rescue every year."
Robert Winter, Kingdom Shopping Centre Manager commented, "The hippo parade has been a huge success yet again and we are extremely proud of our local schools and children for their inspiring designs. I would also like to thank the community for supporting Scottish SSPCA. "
